I've never been to church before. Can I still come?

Absolutely. Many people who visit Atonement come from different faith backgrounds, have been away from church for years, or have never attended a worship service before. You don't need any special knowledge or experience to join us. Just come as you are.

What should I wear?

Whatever makes you comfortable. On any given Sunday, you'll find people in jeans, shorts, dresses, business casual clothes, and everything in between. There is no dress code.

What happens during worship?

Our worship includes music, prayer, scripture readings, a message (sermon), and Holy Communion. The service is printed in a bulletin, and people around you will be happy to help if you have questions. Feel free to participate as much or as little as you're comfortable with.

Do I have to be Lutheran?

Not at all. People from many different backgrounds worship with us. You don't need to be Lutheran to attend worship, participate in our ministries, or become part of our community.
 

What if I don't believe everything the church teaches?

You're still welcome here. Faith is a journey, not a test. Questions, doubts, and wrestling with difficult topics are part of spiritual growth. We believe honest questions can lead to deeper faith and understanding.

Are LGBTQIA+ people welcome?

Yes. Fully and completely. We believe all people are created in God's image and are beloved by God. LGBTQIA+ people are welcome to participate fully in the life, ministry, leadership, and worship of our congregation.

What about my children?

Children are always welcome in worship. We know children wiggle, make noise, ask questions, and sometimes have big feelings—and that's okay. We believe children belong in worship because they are an important part of the church today, not just the church of tomorrow.

Do you have Sunday School?

Yes. We offer opportunities for faith formation and learning for children, youth, and adults. Contact us or visit our events page to learn about current classes and programs.

 

Will I be singled out as a visitor?

No. We'll be happy to meet you if you'd like, but we won't make you stand up, wear a visitor badge, or do anything that might make you uncomfortable.

 

Can I take Communion?

Yes. We practice open table communion, which means all are welcome at Christ's table. You don't need to be Lutheran or a member of Atonement to receive Communion.

 

What if I can't come every week?

That's perfectly okay. Whether you attend every Sunday, once a month, or only occasionally, you are always welcome here.

Is the church accessible?

We strive to make our building and worship accessible to people of all abilities. If you have a specific accessibility need, please contact us and we'll do our best to accommodate you.

 

How do I become a member?

The first step is simply getting to know us. Worship with us, participate in the life of the congregation, ask questions, and see if Atonement feels like home. When you're ready, we'd be happy to talk about membership.

What does Atonement believe?

At the heart of our faith is the belief that God's love is for everyone. We follow Jesus Christ, who welcomed outsiders, cared for those on the margins, challenged injustice, and showed us what God's love looks like in action. We are not perfect people—we are simply people learning together what it means to love God and love our neighbors.
